The Sokoto state government has uncovered 706 cases of fake students who have been illegally collecting the state’s scholarship meant for indigent students.
The fake students were uncovered by the committee for verification of the actual number of students entitled for scholarship in state.
The committee made its findings known when it presented its report recently to the state Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in Sokoto.
Chairman of the committee, Ambassador Shehu Wurno disclosed that the committee verified 14, 532 state indigenes qualified for scholarship.
According to him, the state government owes N688 million for students registration and allowances for the current 2016/2017 session.
He also stated the sum includes N544 million for students registration for the year 2016/2017 academic session while N144 million was calculated as allowances to the number of verified students.
Wurno revealed, that the committee visited 40 tertiary institutions within and outside the country, in the course of its work.
Speaking at the event, Governor Tambuwal commended members of the committee for their work, and assured that the recommendations of the committee would be implemented by the state government.
